It is said that you should never bring work home, as home should be a place of comfort and rest, a sanctuary untouched by professional duties. Nowadays remote work is gaining more and more popularity — not only because of the development of technology and easier access to electronic devices, but additionally because of the pandemic. In such a case the living space becomes an office, so it is simply impossible not to disturb the peace of the home. This has a negative impact both on the quality of the work and on well-being, because it is hard for someone working remotely to separate their private life from their professional life. So how do you make sure that your home space is not associated with work duties and that working from home is a pleasure?
Separate your workspace
It is well known that not everyone can afford to have their own study at home, whether for financial reasons or simply for lack of space. However, the basic step in taking care of your mental comfort is separating the main resting areas from where you work. Under no circumstances should you think about working while lying in bed — it can even cause problems with falling asleep later on. The best idea is to set aside a separate space for this, which definitely should not be in the bedroom. The kitchen table will be a suitable place, as the kitchen itself is usually not associated with rest. It does not have to be the kitchen, though — choose a place where you do not spend time relaxing and create the perfect workspace there.
Take care of the space
Apart from the problem of lowered well-being, there is also the question of difficulties with working remotely in an effective way. At home it is much easier to get distracted than in the office. While working you do not concentrate enough, something keeps drawing your attention away, and as a result your tasks take much longer. The key is to feel in your home office the way you do at the company's premises. Try to recreate it and, for the duration of your work, place in your space objects that you associate with work. At the same time, all the "distractions" should disappear from your field of vision. Thanks to this you will adapt more quickly to the conditions imposed on you or chosen by you, and your duties will be carried out faster and more pleasantly. Remember also to ensure proper ventilation in the room. In offices this is almost always provided due to the existing requirements. Fresh air allows the human mind to work better, so be sure to air your home office.
Lighting in the home office
Appropriate lighting in a home office is, contrary to appearances, a very important element. This is particularly important because of prolonged exposure of the eyes to looking at a screen. Unfortunately this cannot be avoided, but you must not add poor lighting on top of it, as that will only make things worse. Obviously it would be best to work remotely in daylight, but unfortunately that is not always possible. In that case, make sure the contrast between light sources is as low as possible, so that your eyes are less tired after a whole day of work and you avoid the unbearable headache you might otherwise feel.
